What is a mystery snail?

Mystery snails are freshwater aquarium snails from the apple snail family. They spend their time grazing on algae, biofilm and leftover food. An adult shell is typically about 40–50 mm wide, so the 1–2 cm snails we sell still have plenty of growing to do.

Purple, white or blue: which should you choose?

All three colours need exactly the same care, so pick the one you like best. Colour varies naturally from one snail to the next, and no colour is hardier or better than another. You can read more about each one on the purple, white and blue pages.

Will a mystery snail suit your aquarium?

Mystery snails do best in a lidded tank with harder water. Aim for a pH of 7.2 or higher and a temperature of about 21–26°C. Very soft or acidic water is the main thing to avoid, because their shells depend on minerals in the water. Our mystery snail care guide covers tank size, food, plants and eggs in full.

Can you buy mystery snails in the UK?

Yes, in England, Scotland and Wales. Mystery snails are apple snails, which were banned across the EU in 2012, but Defra no longer regulates them as a quarantine pest in Great Britain. The ban still applies in Northern Ireland, so we do not sell or post there. See our delivery page for where we can send snails.
